Work and Wealth

In this chapter, our textbook goes into detail about automation, work, and wealth as effected by information technology. Overall, this chapter is not the most relevant to the documentary, but here are some relevant points.

The topic of automation relates to the algorithms, artificial intelligence, and machine learning models used in social media. Social media runs on algorithms to determine what content to show to a user. These learning algorithms determine what to push to users, not engineers. Once an algorithm has been trained on a sufficient amount of data, engineers might not be able to explain what the logic of an algorithm is.

The documentary focuses on large tech companies such as Facebook and Google. These companies typically have a comparatively small workforce with respect to other large corporations. Employing less workers and increasing automation increases company profits.

Money was discussed in a different context in the documentary than in the textbook. The documentary primarily focused on the monetization of social media. Since employment and wages were not a focus of the documentary, this chapter was not very relevant to the documentary.
